The Launching of Regional Partnership on Drug Control

On 29 March 2012 at 6 p.m. at the Royal Thai Police Sport Club, Vibhavadee Rangsit Road, Bangkok, H.E. Police Captain Chalerm Yoobamrung Ph. D., Deputy Prime Minister and Director of the National Command Center for Drug Elimination (NCCDE) chaired the Regional Partnership on Drug Control and delivered a speech on drug situation, international drug control cooperation, and drug solution along border. More than 200 national and international partners such as ambassadors, members of the Foreign Anti-Narcotic and Crime Community (FANC), representatives of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), drug and police liaison officers post in Thailand as well as Thai anti-drug agencies were invited to the event.

The NCCDE has driven drug control strategy in the first three months and achieved satisfied outcome that can reduce some level of drug problem. Moreover, from the survey, Thai people have more satisfaction on the drug control work. The NCCDE set up management and mechanism in every level and is driving the drug control strategy for the second quarter which is the speed up phase by following the concept of 7 plans, 4 adjustments, 3 principles, 6 priorities and the concept idea to raise the drug control work to be the national and regional issues that need international cooperation especially with neighboring countries.

Having the objective to strengthen cooperation in drug control, Thailand also has international cooperation in drug and precursor chemical control with Mekong basin countries; Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam, who have drug problem linkage. Meeting both operational and policy levels, training courses for drug control officers and intelligence exchange have also being implemented among them. Thailand also joint patrols with Lao PDR and Myanamar to intercept the drug traffickers and protect all vessels in Mekong waterway. The cooperation has sparked up the regional issue.

Thailand have plan to strengthen cooperation with neighboring countries in drug prevention and suppression as well as alternative development to reduce the severe of drug abuse, trafficking, smuggling. Thailand is also creating international ally network to cope with the drug problems.

The guests of the event “Regional Partnership on Drug Control” have been informed the drug control policy and drug control works of Thailand. It will also create well understanding and seeking for cooperation in drug control from foreign countries.
